A limited enrollment seminar & workshop Lecture & workshop at Hakone Estate & Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga CA. ****Learn Japanese-style home & garden layout in a seminar and workshop setting. Working under the guidance of your instructor you will each sketch your own unique home & garden layout ideas and solve layout problems. You will learn from other participants by means of reports and discussion in an informal workshop setting. Learn to draw on inspirational written word, visual material, or other sources all participants bring to the seminar. You are responsible for providing your own drawing supplies (or modeling materials if you prefer 3 dimensional work).

Saturdays in March and November, 2 PM - 5 PM. at Hakone Estate & Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, CA. Drawing workshop seminar meets in the Cultural Exchange Center. **** Put it all together - Japanese principles of native garden composition and our own native landscape knowledge. Working under the guidance of your instructor you will sketch your own inspirational landscape, turn it into a garden composition, then specify native materials, construction and maintenance techniques. Learn to draw on inspirational written word, visual material, or other sources. Bring images, 8.5 x 11 min sketching pad, pencils - 4B or thicker, sharpener and a kneaded rubber eraser.

Have your trees grown too big for the space they occupy. In your layout, are there some effects that can’t be had without smaller versions of specific trees? Have you discovered that dwarf cultivars of sufficient size are twice the cost and hard to find? That smaller specimens grow too slowly? That the less expensive, faster growing large varieties grow too big or too course? Have your attempts at pruning them been unsuccessful? Learn what can be done.

Bamboo Aesthetics and Arboriculture

Lecture, demonstration and hands-on pruning and division. Learn about the use of bamboo as a landscape plant will focus on some species suitable for the San Francisco Bay Area. Topics will include selection, growth habits, life cycle, design uses, planting, care and control (site, sun/shade, watering, fertilizing, soils, renovation, pruning and division). We will conclude with a walk in the garden to see and discuss some of the bamboo planted there.Hands-on learning, if any, shall be on materials we bring to classroom. Bring your own container plants, cut branches, hand-shears, and/or photos of plants.
